Clark Gable – U.S. Army Air Corps … Enlisted in 1942 at age 41. Volunteered for combat duty and flew missions over Germany. Earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Gable joined the Army Air Corps and led a film section making training films. Unsatisfied with this he flew on combat missions over Germany where his biggest fan Adolf Hitler placed a bounty on his head if captured alive.
Charlton Heston – U.S. Army Air Corps … B-25 gunner; saw action in the Pacific.
Hal Holbrook – Served in Canada with the Army
William Holden – U.S. Army Air Corps … Served 1942-1945. His brother, a U.S. Navy pilot, was killed in the Pacific in 1944.
Rock Hudson – U.S. Navy aircraft mechanic in the Philippines.

Werner Klemperer – U.S. Army … Stationed in Hawaii as a Military Policeman, he auditioned for and was accepted into Maurice Evans’ Special Services unit.

Glenn Miller – U.S. Army … Assigned to the Army Specialist Corps. Convinced the Military that he could modernize the Army Band and improve the morale of the troops. Organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. His plane disappeared on 15 December 1944 over the English Channel.
Robert Montgomery – U.S. Navy … Enlisted in the British Military before American joined the war and drove ambulances in France until the Dunkirk invasion. When America entered the war, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Naval Attaché on British destroyers hunting German U-Boats. He commanded a PT boat and participated in the D-Day invasion aboard a destroyer.
Wayne Morris – U.S. Navy … Flew 57 combat missions in the Pacific. Shot down seven Japanese aircraft, becoming an “Ace”. Credited with assisting the sinking of five Japanese warships.
Paul Newman – U.S. Navy radioman in torpedo bombers
Tyrone Power – U.S. Marine Corps … Enlisted immediately after Pearl Harbor. Flew wounded Marines from Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

UK police give Muslim prisoners compasses so they can face Mecca to pray.
They may already have wandered from the straight and narrow. But Muslims held in police cells in one area are being given every help to find their way back.
Norfolk Police is offering compasses to suspects so they can face accurately towards Mecca when praying. The force had already painted the ceilings of some of its cells to point worshippers in the right direction.
It tested the idea at a police station in Norwich and has recommended extending it across the county. If successful, the scheme could be rolled out to other forces around the UK.
The report states: ‘The painted compasses on the ceilings at Bethel Street will be replicated across the rest of the county. ’However, further guidance has been received and in future small compasses will be issued to those detainees who request them.’
Officially, this is because Muslims may not always be in a cell with directions to Mecca at prayer time. (And why the hell should we give a damn?)

Six supporters of Iran’s presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, have reportedly been hanged after authorities warned they would tolerate no further protests over the disputed June 12th presidential elections.
Speaking after Iran’s Guardian Council upheld the election victory of incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sources in Iransaid in a telephone interview that the hangings took place in the holy city of Mashhad on Monday.

Afshin, a shopkeeper from south-west Iran, alleges that one of his male friends was beaten and repeatedly raped after being arrested at an opposition rally after last month’s disputed election. You could tell straight away that he had just been released. His face was bruised all over. His teeth were broken and he could hardly open his eyes. He was not even into politics.
I called a friend of mine who is a doctor to come and see him. The doctor told me he had suffered rupture of the rectum and the doctor feared colonic bleeding. He suggested we take him to the hospital immediately. The nurses were crying. Two of them asked what sort of beast had beaten him up like that.
He was arrested the Monday after the election. “I was kept in a van till evening that day and then transferred to a solitary cell where I was kept for two days,” he said. “Then I was repeatedly interrogated, beaten and hung from a ceiling. They call it chicken kebab. They tie your hands and feet together and hang you from the ceiling, turning you around and beating you with cables.
“They gave us warm water to drink and one meal a day. Repeated smacking was a regular punishment. In interrogations, they kept on asking if I was instructed from abroad. ‘ “It was on Saturday or Sunday that they raped me for the first time. There were three or four huge guys we had not seen before. They came to me and tore my clothes. I tried to resist but two of them laid me on the floor and the third did it. It was done in front of four other detainees. They did it to two other cell mates in the next days. Then it became a routine. We were so weak and beaten up that could not do anything.
They said: ‘If you don’t come to your senses we will send you to Adel Abad [another prison in Shiraz] to the pederasts’ section so that you receive such treatment every day.‘ I was so weak I did not know what to say. Then they asked for my contacts. I told them I had no contacts and I was informed about the demonstrations through the internet. ”The same routine was continued till this morning when I was released.
