In January 2009 an American drilling company by the name of Noble Energy, made a major gas discovery during exploratory drilling off the coast of northern Israel. At a staggering 3.1 trillion cubic feet, it was the largest discovery of natural gas in the history of the company. And it was found just 90 kilometres off the coast of Haifa. Further drilling in February had increased that estimate to around 5 trillion cubic feet of gas, and experts said they thought even that figure was too conservative. By late March an additional 500 billion cubic feet of gas had been discovered. The discoveries have increased tensions with Lebanon, which laid claim to any gas that was discovered to be within its coastal waters. But the drilling rights to wells are owned by an Israeli firm, and further examination of the sites proved that the gas pockets were within Israel’s territory. Israel had been struggling with a natural gas shortage due to difficulties with the supply from Egypt. But this latest discovery is expected to last at least 15 years, meaning not only will Israel no longer be dependant on Arab gas, but it could become a major energy exporter.

I used to work for Noble Drilling until its assets were bought by Seawell in the North Sea. This is a major breakthrough for Israeli domestic energy production and contributes signifcantly to Israels strateigic importance.
What will happen now is that Israel will build some platforms to produce the gas fields, with a online production target of 2012. You can read more here:

Btw, Cordesman’s claim that middle eastern oil will become irradiated from nuclear fallout is nonsense. Most oil is in reserve in the oil bearing rock 1-2 miles underground, where no form of external radiation can penetrate. At most we can expect platforms and well heads destroyed, resulting in catastrophic environmental damage. And brace your selves for oil prices of $300 a barrel.

Israel (the country) will not survive. It is small enough that what few weapons Iran could construct before they strike would be enough to wipe it from the face of the earth.
Israel (the idea) however will survive as long as there are free thinking people anywher.
If Iran is smart they’ll wait before they strike for a Labour government to come to power again in Israel. Those are far less likely to strike back.
Of course with Obama in the White House the US will more likely than not support Iran in a war against Israel and provide them with coverage by the anti-missile defenses that are denied by Obama to Americans and NATO allies.
Obama might even order a large scale preemptive strike against Israel to prevent them from launching their Jericho missiles against Iran, thus ensuring that his mullah friends can destroy their common enemy with impunity.
